Inpatient Rehabilitation
Sometimes life places obstacles in our path that we need help to overcome. Stroke, serious injury, bone fracture and the onset of disease are life-altering events that can affect mobility, memory and other cognitive function. Worst of all, they can mean the loss of independence.
The Regional Rehabilitation Center at Lewis-Gale Medical Center helps adult patients triumph over personal challenges, restoring their productivity, self-reliance, and quality of life. Our inpatient rehabilitation program is goal oriented and family focused. And because our services are hospital based, our patients enjoy an impressive rate of successful outcomes.
What Makes Us Different
A case manager is assigned to each patient to guide the patient and family through every step of the rehabilitation process. All of our rehabilitation therapists are fully licensed. |
Established in 1985, were the largest inpatient rehab program in western Virginia, treating more than 800 patients annually.
At the heart of our center is a dedicated, enthusiastic staff of specially trained professionals. Physiatrists (physicians who are specialists in physical medicine and rehabilitation), rehab nurses, physical and occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, case managers, a therapeutic recreation specialist, neuropsychologists and numerous other healthcare professionals comprise our team.
Because we provide intensive therapy on a daily basis, including weekends, our patients receive nearly twice as many hours of therapy per week as patients in a skilled nursing facility. This level of therapy means that our patients realize improvements more quickly and return home sooner.
Most importantly for patients, our rehab center is hospital based.
Hospital-based Rehabilitation: Simply Better For Patients
|
Patients stay at the Lewis-Gale Regional Rehabilitation Center for an average of 12 days. Eighty percent of them return directly home.
|
Our spacious, well-equipped rehab unit is located on the fourth floor of Lewis-Gale Medical Center.
Rehab services that are housed within an accredited, acute-care hospital offer many advantages for patients:
Recovery occurs faster than in a
non-hospital environment
Immediate physician care is available
around the clock
If a sudden change in condition occurs,
a complete array of medical services
is instantly accessible.
Patients who participate in hospital-based rehab programs not only experience improved outcomes but quicker healing and recovery times. A study in the Journal of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation suggests that orthopedic patients who receive comprehensive, hospital-based rehab therapy are more likely to be discharged to home rather than to an interim care facility.

Occupational Therapy uses the activities of everyday living to promote maximum functioning at home and in the workplace.
Speech/Language Therapy includes the techniques and strategies to evaluate and treat communication and cognitive disorders.
Therapeutic Recreation incorporates current, and develops new, skills and interests to increase physical, cognitive, emotional and social functions.
Dedicated to Quality and Safety

Were accredited by The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), the nation's leading standards-setting and accrediting health care body.
